Point One - Audio Transcript

Welcome to the first point on the Lihue Loop Audio Tour. If you look in front of you, you will see Kalena Park, one of the few parks situated in the town of Lihue. The park is a great place to bring family, kids, and friends to relax and have some fun and exercise in the nice weather.

Although the park looks just like any other small park, it actually has some history behind it. Back in 1934 the Kalena Park property was owned by the Mutual Telephone Company. Later the land was bought in the early 1970s by the County. It was built alongside the new Lihue Fire station next door.

A wide range of people come to the park every day, from kids, to tenagers to adults. Many of these people participate in activities to keep them outside and fit.
The park is situated with a court where kids and adults can hold tournaments, games and, practices. Adults also play pickleball on the court quite often. There is also a playground where small kids can have fun climbing and going down the slides.

The park is due for some remodeling. Back in July of 2019 a grant for $218,000 was awarded to refurbish the basketball court. The same year an $80,000 dollar grant was awarded to Get Fit Kauai, to help develop a master plan for more improvements of the park.
Big plans are in the works for Kalena Park so you have to stay tuned to see what will happen next. If you would like to know more bout Kalena Park please visit www.kalenapark.com. This was Curran Ibbs from Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School’s Advanced Media Productions Class. Thank you for listening and enjoy the rest of your audio tour! Aloha!
